ReplyDeletePeople in the 21st Century seem to enjoy the fruits of liberty, however, overlook the responsibilty of citizenship.
Founding Father, James Wilson emphasized the duties as well as the rights of citizens to the Constitutional Convention. He was a signer of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
"Need I infer, that is the duty of every citizen to use his best and most unremitting endeavours for preserving it (the Constitution) pure, healthful and vigorous? For the accomplishment of this great purpose, the exertions of no one citizen are unimportant. Let no one, therefore harbour, for a moment, the mean idea, that he is and can be of no value to his country: let the contrary manly impression animate his soul. Every one can, at many tim, perform, to the state useful services; and he, who steadily pursues the road of patriotism has the most inviting prospect of being able, at some times, to perform eminent ones."
Responsibilities of a citizen must be intrinsic to their character. Voluntary participation in public affairs, enlisting in the military in time of war, serving on school boards, working, unpaid on political campaigns, petitioning legislatures, supporting the existing political executive in an hour of crisis, in many other ways of helping. Remembering if your political party doesn't happen to win, the majority rules, and must be supported, whether you agree or not.

ReplyDeleteIs this what happened in the W.Bush years? Did good people get so wrapped up in their "greed" and "life style" that they allowed "evil to triumph?"
